PUBG Mobile earned $146 million from player spending in May

    While Fortnite dominates the battle-royale genre on consoles and PCs, PUBG Mobile is king when it comes to phones.PUBG Mobile earned $146 million from player spending in May, according to a report from data insights firm Sensor Tower, making it the top-grossing mobile app that month. The total is split between $76 million in revenue from PUBG Mobile outside of China and Game for Peace, a Chinese-specific version of the game that brought in $70 million.

    These changes illustrate the difficulties facing gaming companies in China, where the government has cracked down on titles it sees as anti-social or corrupting.In February, the government regulator stopped approving new licenses for video games altogether, while existing titles have had to be rewritten or incorporate time limits. In 2017, for example, Tencent’s last smash hit mobile game, the fantasy MOBA Honor of Kings, limited children under 12 to one hour of daily play, and children aged 12 to 18 to two hours.

    Game for Peace released in China at the start of May after Tencent’s PUBG Mobile games were given an overhaul in an effort to get around regulations and finally monetise. The game earned over $14 million within 72 hours of its launch.The revenue made from both versions of the battle royale title added together to make it the world’s highest grossing mobile app across the App Store and Google Play in May.
